Genesis 18:16-19:38 Matthew 6:25-7:14 Psalm 8 Proverbs 2:6-15
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them…Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:31,33 TNIV).
It is hard to trust God when we cannot see Him. It is even harder when we can’t remember Him doing anything for us in the past. Sometimes our lives seem like Lot’s life in Sodom and Gomorrah, surrounded by people who don’t care about God and who seem to be doing quite well without Him. Telling others about needing to trust God to take care of us is often found rather humorous by people we know. Instead, they look to getting a good paying job with benefits or electing the right candidate that will vote to have the government supply us with what we want. Even after we’ve trusted God with our lives and He has done amazing things, we still have a tendency to think we need to take action ourselves, like Lot’s daughters did.
David asks in his psalm today, “What are…human beings that you care for them?” (Psalm 8:4 TNIV). Sometimes we may find ourselves asking God, “Who am I that You care about me?” When we take a good honest look at ourselves, we can see how we’ve been selfish. We’ve asked God for more than just what we need to eat, drink or wear. We want the latest and the greatest and we want it now. But to follow God means to trust Him to take care of what we need. Worry and stress will drive us crazy, but knowing God will take care of us brings peace. We know He will come through, because He takes care of the birds and the flowers—creatures we don’t even give a second thought about. Even more, He considers us children He loves.
Father God, thank You for loving us and for promising to give us the things we need. Teach us to come to You when we need something rather than stressing ourselves out about how we will get it ourselves. We want our trust in You to grow stronger as we see how You continue to take care of us. Amen.
