The Ultimate Authority

Exodus 8-9 Matthew 19:13-30 Psalm 24 Proverbs 6:1-5

He and his officials hardened their hearts. So Pharaoh’s heart was hard and he would not let the Israelites go, just as the LORD had said through Moses. Exodus 9:34-35

Before all these plagues started, God told Moses He would harden Pharaoh's heart. But, as each plague passes, the Bible tells us that Pharaoh hardens his own heart. So who is doing the hardening here? Does Pharaoh really have a choice to not harden his heart?

Pharaoh does have a choice. God knows us all very well. Well enough to know which choice we will make. Imagine a courtship that has lasted a few years. She wants to get married and she starts making ultimatums. She may know what choice he will make, but she offers the ultimatum for herself and for others to see the truth of his choice.

God in a way is courting Pharaoh. God demonstrates His power over all the gods of Egypt. But Pharaoh refuses to now the knee. Pharaoh shows the world that He does not want to be ruled by God and refuses to be ruled by Him.

God does the same with us today. We shows us how He is bigger and stronger than anything we worship. It is an ultimatum of sorts. Will we love Him only, rejecting all other Gods? Will we trust Him to take care of our every need?

Father God, we want to trust You with everything, but sometimes we still tend to trust in the stuff this world values most. Help us to see that You will take care of us like no one or anything else. Continue to show us Your strength in our lives. Amen.
