Soul Searching

Genesis 8-10, Matthew 4:12-25, Psalm 4, Proverbs 1:20-23

“When you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the LORD” (Psalm 4:4,5 TNIV).

How many times have I come to the end of the day and said to God, “Forgive me for my sins and help me to live a better life tomorrow,” only to turn over and go to sleep without any further thought? The truth is, searching my heart and taking time to listen for God’s voice requires a time investment, and I really don’t like admitting I really enjoy doing things, or in some cases not doing things, as God has asked. Searching my heart is uncomfortable and sitting quietly listening can get boring fast.

However, this is exactly what we need to do. This is where we see our hearts for what they really are. This is where we begin to see how much we need Jesus and His heart transplant. Seeing the true condition of our hearts brings real heartfelt confessions for what we’ve done. We find we don’t want to continue behaving that way. As a result, our trust in God grows in ways we never imagined before. We no longer have to guess that we’ve been forgiven; we can know because we have opened our hearts to Jesus and allowed Him to forgive us and start changing us from the inside-out.

Lord Jesus, teach us to take time to search our hearts and to open them to You. Give us the patience to be quiet and listen for Your voice. We know that following You is more than just joining a church and giving money offerings. We want to the heart transplant You offer to change us from the inside-out. Amen.
