Genesis 42:18-43:34 Matthew 13:47-14:12 Psalm 18:16-36 Proverbs 4:7-10
For who is God besides the LORD?
And who is the Rock except our God? – Psalm 18:31
In the Old Testament days, people had idols carved out of wood or stone. While they worshiped in front of these idols, they really truly believed there was a powerful entity who would punish them if they didn’t bring them offerings. We don’t see people worshiping idols like this in the United States very much. But we have our own little powers we depend on. Powers like money, reputation, career. Or we look up to others as more than just heroes. People like athletes, actors, or politicians.
Looking at these different things we look to bring us security and happiness, or to ward off bad things in our lives, do we really believe they will always be there for us? Are any of these things eternal? What happens when they aren’t enough? God is eternal. He is the only one who will never let us down. Try it. Talk to Him and trust Him with something. See how it works out.
Father God, we know You want what is best for us. Usually we think of what we can see here on Earth as what is best for us, but You see beyond to the New Earth. Help us to trust You and to see that there is no God but You and there is nothing that is as strong and long-lasting as You are. Amen.
