“I am the LORD. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty...I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan. - Exodus 6:3,4 TNIV
God introduced Himself to each new generation as El Shaddai, all powerful God. Each man had his struggle in trusting God and allowing God to rule his life. I wonder what Isaac thought when his father told him the story of his miracle birth. How did his dad's faith impact his thoughts about God when Abraham was willing to sacrifice him? Did Isaac tell these stories to Jacob? Surely, each man saw his father's faith and was impressed by it when he got older and God introduced Himself personally, surely this made it easier to trust Godand allow Him to rule his life.
Perhaps this is a bit of a theological stretch for this text. But today I become a dad for the first time. As I think about what I would like my son to see in me, a strong faith and love for God is at the top. Still, this is a personal relationship. I can teach him about my faith and introduce him to God. And just like anyone else, he will have to choose whether to accept God and God's rule in his life personally. But, sitting in the hospital room waiting for him to be born, I pray that my life leaves my son wanting to know and love God, too.
Father God, let this faith and love that we have found in You inspire others to want to have that kind of faith and love, too. We want to pass on a legacy greater than any bloodline or estate. Let thoe who are close to us see that You are the greatest treasure incur lives. Amen.
