Genesis 35-36 Matthew 12:1-21 Psalm 15 Proverbs 3:21-26
Who may worship in your sanctuary, LORD?
Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?
Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right,
speaking the truth from sincere hearts. – Psalm 15:1-2I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices…Yes, the law permits a person to do good on the Sabbath. – Matthew 12:7,12
Many of us were taught to be good boys and girls growing up. Whether we were told that Santa only brings presents for the good boys and girls or that Jesus doesn’t love bad boys and girls, the message comes through: I will miss out if I don’t behave myself.
The Jewish leaders had practiced looking good, and they were good at it. What’s more, they made sure everyone knew how good they were and others weren’t. But the goodness was all an act. Like an angry kid who tells his sister he’s sorry for breaking her toy because he was afraid of what Mom would do if he didn’t—not because he was really sorry.
God wants us to have hearts that are full of His love. He wants people who know He loves them and are eager to share this love with everyone around them—whether they deserve it or not. It is always right to do good with a heart full of God’s love. That’s what He wants more than anything else we can give Him.
Father God, teach us to see life from Your perspective. Filter our vision with the lenses of Your love. Teach us to show mercy and to do good to others so they can see what You really look like. Amen.
